Exotic Leathers

Beyond standard bovine hides, Roman Dog sources rare and exotic leathers for clients who demand something truly singular. Each exotic material requires different tooling, finishing, and construction techniques — skills we've spent years developing. Lead times for exotic pieces are longer and pricing reflects the rarity of the material.

Bison bison
American Buffalo
North American bison hide is substantially thicker and more porous than cattle leather, producing a bold, deeply textured grain with exceptional tensile strength. It softens with wear while retaining structural integrity — a working leather that outlasts nearly everything else.
Extreme durability Heavy grain texture USA sourced CITES compliant
Struthio camelus
Ostrich
Immediately recognizable by its distinctive quill follicle pattern, ostrich leather is one of the world's most sought-after exotic hides. Exceptionally supple despite its strength, it conforms to the body naturally and resists cracking. The raised follicle pattern creates striking visual texture across hardware and edge work.
Supple & flexible Quill pattern Premium grade Farm-raised
Crocodylus niloticus / porosus
Crocodile
The apex of exotic leather. Nile and saltwater crocodile belly cuts display the iconic rectangular scale pattern that has defined luxury goods for over a century. Dense, dimensionally stable, and nearly impervious to moisture — crocodile hardware pieces develop a deep patina that only improves with age. Fully CITES documented.
CITES documented Scale pattern Moisture resistant Heirloom quality
Giraffa camelopardalis
Giraffe
Giraffe hide carries a natural polygon patch pattern — no two hides are identical. The leather is thick, stiff when new, and breaks in to a firm but pliable texture over time. Its rarity and visual distinctiveness make it a statement material for commissions where uniqueness is the objective. Legal sourcing documentation provided with every order.
Unique patterning Legally sourced Extremely rare Commission only
Camelus dromedarius
Camel
Camel leather has been prized across North Africa and the Middle East for millennia. Its fine, tight grain and natural oils give it outstanding resistance to heat and abrasion. The surface texture is smooth with subtle variation — less dramatic than other exotics, but producing exceptionally refined finished goods with a warm, sandy tone range.
Fine tight grain Natural oils Heat resistant Warm tones

Roman Dog was born from a simple frustration: the market was flooded with cheap, mass-produced equipment that looked the part but failed at the moment it mattered most. We decided to do something about that.

We are craftspeople first. Every piece that leaves our workshop has been cut, stitched, riveted, and finished by hand. We use the same leatherworking techniques that saddle-makers have relied on for centuries — because they work, and because good work deserves good methods.

The name comes from the Roman tradition of the canis fidelis — the faithful dog — a symbol of loyalty, discipline, and devoted service. We think those qualities belong in what we make.

We don't advertise widely. Most of our customers find us through word of mouth in the community, which is exactly how we like it. When you order from Roman Dog, you're not buying off a shelf — you're commissioning a craftsperson who cares about every detail of what they're putting their name on.
